Quick answer

Give every link you control a predictable tag, and write the naming rules down once. Google's Analytics help says to always use utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, that values are case sensitive, and that Google Ads auto-tagging is preferable to manual tags for Google Ads traffic. For Meta ads, social bios, Business Profile links and printed QR codes, use lowercase names from a shared sheet. For WhatsApp, where a link cannot carry UTM tags into the chat, use a short reference code in the pre-filled message instead and record it in your lead log.

The problem tags solve

Open the acquisition report of a service business that has run ads for a year and you will often see traffic split across lines such as Google, google, google / cpc, Facebook, facebook.com and (not set). The same campaign appears under three spellings, and the owner cannot tell whether Instagram or Facebook brought the booking. Tags do not create traffic or improve ads. They stop your own reports from lying to you, which makes every later decision about budget cheaper to get right.

This article is a practical rulebook for UAE and Saudi service businesses: what to tag, how to name things, where tags do not work, and how to cover WhatsApp, which is where many enquiries actually happen. It complements conversion tracking for calls and WhatsApp, which explains how conversions are counted, by covering the labels that tell you where each one came from.

What Google documents about UTM parameters

Google's Analytics Help describes six campaign parameters. The three you should always use together are utm_source (the referrer, such as google or a newsletter), utm_medium (the marketing medium, such as cpc or email) and utm_campaign (the product, slogan or promotion). The help page also recommends utm_id, which identifies a specific campaign, and mentions utm_term for paid keywords and utm_content for telling creatives apart. Two warnings matter most. Parameter values are case sensitive, so Google and google are different values. And inconsistent spellings such as SpringSale and Spring_Sale are tracked as separate campaigns. Adopt lowercase and a single separator from day one.

Google Ads: let auto-tagging do the work

For Google Ads traffic, Google's own help recommends auto-tagging. It saves tagging every final URL, avoids spelling inconsistencies such as utm_source=Google versus utm_source=google, and unlocks more detailed reporting, including Google Ads dimensions such as ad group and keyword in Analytics. If you use manual and auto-tagging together, Google says the source, medium and other traffic-classification dimensions use the auto-tagged values, while manually tagged utm_content and utm_term values still feed the Manual Ad Content and Manual Term dimensions. So adding utm_source=google to your Google Ads links gains almost nothing and can confuse people reading the URL. You can confirm the setting in Google Ads under Settings, Account settings, Auto-tagging.

Use manual tags where auto-tagging does not apply: Meta ads, organic social posts, bio links, email, your Google Business Profile website link, printed material and partner placements. Our search terms report guide covers the reporting side of Google Ads itself, and the account audit checklist includes a check on tagging.

A naming convention you can paste into a sheet

Build one tab in your shared spreadsheet called Naming. Every new campaign gets a row before it gets a link. Use this pattern.

PartRuleGoodBad
CaseAlways lowercasepaid_socialPaid-Social
SeparatorOne character, underscoredeep_clean_nov26Deep Clean (Nov)
Campaign nameservice, area, month and year, in that orderac_repair_marina_nov26promo2
SourceOne value per platforminstagramig, Insta, IG_ads
MediumOne value per channel typepaid_socialsocial, ads, fb
No personal dataNever put names, phone numbers or emails in a linkc1042ahmed_0501234567

That last row is a privacy point, not a style choice. URLs appear in logs, analytics and referrer data, and Google Analytics rules do not allow sending personally identifiable information, so check the current policy. Use anonymous IDs only. The same pattern lets you name campaigns in the platform identically to the tag, so a search in your lead log and a search in the ad account find the same string.

Meta, Instagram and Facebook links

Meta traffic does not carry Google's auto-tagging, so tags are your main way to separate placements and creatives. Meta's ad setup includes a place to add URL parameters to the website link; check the current interface or Meta Business Help for the exact field and for any dynamic values it supports, as these change. Whatever you choose, keep the values readable and consistent with your sheet: source set to facebook or instagram, medium set to paid_social, campaign set to the same name as the campaign in Ads Manager, and content set to the creative name. For organic posts and the bio link, use medium organic_social so paid and unpaid traffic stay apart.

If your Meta ads open WhatsApp rather than a website, UTM tags will not help, which brings us to the part most guides skip.

WhatsApp: tag the conversation, not the link

A WhatsApp link opens a chat; it does not load a web page, so there is nowhere for a UTM parameter to be recorded by your analytics. The practical workaround is a reference code inside the pre-filled message. A link can pre-fill a message such as "Hi, I want a quote for deep cleaning (ref: ig1)". When the message arrives, the coordinator sees the code, labels the chat with the source, and writes it in the lead log. Our own pages use a similar idea: the pre-filled message names the page it came from.

PlacementReference code exampleRecorded as
Instagram bio buttonig-bioSource: instagram, medium: organic_social
Meta click-to-WhatsApp ad, video Amw-aSource: facebook, medium: paid_social, content: video_a
Google Business Profile message linkgbpSource: google_business
Flyer QR codeqr-novSource: print

Customers sometimes delete the pre-filled text, so treat the code as a helpful signal rather than a perfect measure, and add a question in your first reply such as "How did you find us?" to fill the gaps. Read the click-to-WhatsApp ads guide for how those ads are built, the follow-up system for how to record the answer, and forms versus WhatsApp for which route to give each type of visitor.

Offline and local channels

Many UAE and Saudi service companies get a large share of work from Google Maps, referrals, vehicle branding and printed material. These can be tagged too, within limits.

  • Google Business Profile: add tags to the website link with source google_business and medium organic, so profile visits can be separated from ordinary organic search.
  • QR codes: point each print run to its own tagged link, e.g. source qr_flyer and campaign by month, so you can compare flyers, vans and shop windows.
  • Referral partners: give each partner a distinct landing link or code word.
  • Phone calls: use call tracking or ask "How did you hear about us?" and log the answer; tags cannot follow a phone call on their own.

The Google Business Profile guide shows where the website link sits, and the posts guide explains how to add tagged links to posts.

Reading tagged data in GA4 without fooling yourself

Once tags are consistent, check the traffic acquisition report by source and medium and look at which lines contain your key events, such as call clicks or WhatsApp opens. Three habits prevent bad conclusions. First, compare sources on the number that matters, enquiries that became jobs from your lead log, not on sessions. Second, remember that a visitor may click a Meta ad, leave, and come back later through a Google search; each platform will claim part of the credit, so look at trends over a month rather than single bookings. Third, watch for traffic reported as "(not set)" or direct: Google notes that omitting recommended parameters leads to "(not set)" values, which usually means a link slipped through untagged. Use the lead tracking spreadsheet to hold what GA4 cannot see.

A worked example with hypothetical numbers

A pest control company runs a Meta campaign, a Google Ads campaign and a flyer drop in November. Before tagging, the report shows 40 sessions from "social", 55 from "google" and 20 "direct". After tagging, it shows paid_social with the campaign name, cpc by auto-tagging, and print via a QR link. Suppose the lead log then shows that paid_social produced 25 chats but only 2 jobs, cpc produced 14 chats and 7 jobs, and the QR flyer produced 6 chats and 3 jobs. These figures are invented purely to show the logic. The decision is not "stop Meta"; it is to test a stricter offer and qualifying question on Meta, keep Google Ads, and print more flyers in the same neighbourhood. Without tags, the three channels would have been one blur.

A 45-minute tagging audit

  1. List every link you control: ads, posts, bios, profile, email signature, QR codes, partner pages.
  2. Mark each with its tag status: tagged, auto-tagged or none.
  3. Write the naming sheet: sources, mediums and a campaign naming pattern.
  4. Retag the top five links by traffic and leave the long tail for later.
  5. Test one link: click it, confirm in GA4 real-time or a test property that source and medium appear as intended.
  6. Add the reference-code habit to every WhatsApp link.
  7. Recheck after two weeks for "(not set)" and mixed spellings.

Mistakes we see in tagging plans

  • Adding manual UTM source and medium to Google Ads links while auto-tagging is on.
  • Letting each team member invent campaign names.
  • Tagging internal links on your own site, which can start a new session and hide the true source.
  • Putting personal data in links.
  • Expecting tags to track phone calls or WhatsApp chats by themselves.

How we work at ZED

ZED is a digital marketing agency for service companies and clinics. Our conversion tracking service starts by agreeing a short list of conversions, then sets up GA4 with Google Tag Manager so each call, WhatsApp and form button has its own event with a name, time and source, and reports enquiries, sources and cost per enquiry in one dashboard. On the social media service we describe tracked links and chat prompts on every post, and on the Google Ads service page we describe measuring calls and WhatsApp rather than clicks. We do not publish a price list or promise results. To start, send the channels you use and a few example links through WhatsApp or the contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need UTM parameters if I use Google Ads?

For Google Ads traffic, Google recommends auto-tagging instead of manual tags. You still need UTM tags for other channels such as Meta ads, organic social, email, your Business Profile link and print.

Which UTM parameters are required?

Google's Analytics help says to always use utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. utm_id, utm_term and utm_content are additional options.

Are UTM values case sensitive?

Yes. Google and google count as different values. Use lowercase everywhere and write the naming rules down.

Can I track WhatsApp enquiries with UTM tags?

Not directly, because a WhatsApp link opens a chat rather than a web page. Use a reference code in the pre-filled message, label the chat and record the source in your lead log.

What happens if I use both auto-tagging and manual tags in Google Ads?

Google states that the source, medium and similar dimensions use the auto-tagged values, while manual utm_content and utm_term still feed their own dimensions. So manual source and medium add little.

Should I tag links to my own website pages?

Generally no. Tagging internal links can start a new session and replace the real source. Tag links that come from outside your site.

Can I put a customer's name or phone number in a tracking link?

No. Use anonymous IDs. Links appear in logs and reports, and personal data should not be sent to analytics tools.

Can ZED set up the tagging and naming sheet?

We can review your current links, naming and tracking and advise on a convention. We do not promise results or fixed prices; send your channels and examples on WhatsApp.
