A Business Profile post is a short update, offer or event that appears on your Google profile in Search and Maps. It does not replace reviews or a good category, and Google's own help does not claim it changes rankings. Its job is to turn people who already found you into callers, by showing current offers, hours, projects and a clear button. Plan four weeks, tag the links, avoid unverifiable phone numbers and regulated claims, and measure calls and enquiries by source.
What posts are, and what Google actually says about them
Most posting advice online makes bold promises about ranking. The safer starting point is what Google publishes. In the Business Profile Help, posts let you share announcements, offers, updates and event details with customers on Search and Maps. There are three types: an Update (description, photo or video and an optional button), an Offer (a title, dates and times, with a View Offer button) and an Event (a title and start and end dates). Posts appear in the Updates or Overview tab on mobile and in the From the owner section on desktop, and posts older than six months are archived unless you set a date range.
Notice what is not there: no promised ranking effect, no recommended frequency and no post-level reporting. We therefore treat posts as a conversion tool. A person who found your listing for the wrong reasons, or who is comparing three companies, sees something current and a button to act. That is useful even if it never moves a ranking. The wider profile work is in our Business Profile optimization guide and the local SEO guide for Dubai.
Which post type for which job
| Type | Use it for | Example for a UAE service business | Needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update | Projects, team news, seasonal reminders, schedule changes | A before-hours reminder or a completed project photo with a booking button | Description, optional photo or video, optional button |
| Offer | A dated promotion you are allowed to run | A limited check-up period or a seasonal service package | Title, dates and times; link and terms are optional |
| Event | Open days, workshops, webinars, launches | A free workshop for building managers or a studio open day | Title, start and end dates and times |
Offers deserve care. Hotels, for example, cannot create offer posts under Google's policy, and some regulated sectors have extra advertising limits. If you are unsure whether you may promote a discount in your sector, post an update about the service instead and check the rules.
Rules that get posts rejected
Google reviews each post and marks it Live, Pending or Not approved. From the help pages, these are the points that matter most for a business owner:
- Keep posts professional, respectful and family-friendly, with complete details and links only to trusted sites.
- Phone numbers and other contact details in the text may be removed if Google cannot verify they belong to the business; use the Call now button, which uses the verified profile number.
- Content about products in regulated industries, such as alcohol, tobacco or gambling, is not allowed in posts.
- You are responsible for following applicable laws, so health, financial and legal businesses should be especially conservative.
- Pending can also simply mean the profile is not verified, so check verification before debugging the text.
Photos and videos have their own rules: Google asks for JPG or PNG images between 10 KB and 5 MB, recommends 720 x 720 pixels, with a minimum of 250 x 250, and accepts videos up to 30 seconds and 75 MB. Use real photos, in focus and well lit, without heavy filters.
The four-week plan
Do not start by asking what to post today. Start with a month and four themes, each answering one question a customer has before calling. Write all four posts in one session, schedule them, and review at the end of the month. Google lets you schedule a post and set weekly, monthly or custom recurring schedules.
| Week | Theme | Post type | Button | What the reader should think |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Your main service, explained simply | Update | Call now or Learn more | They do exactly what I need and I know what it involves |
| 2 | Proof from a real job (with consent) | Update with photo | Book or WhatsApp link | They are real and recent |
| 3 | A time-limited reason to act | Offer or Event, only if allowed | Offer link or Sign up | If I call this week there is a benefit |
| 4 | Practical info: hours, area, what to prepare | Update | Call now | I know when and how to reach them |
Then repeat with fresh jobs and questions, and shift themes by season. For a pest control company, week 1 might explain how a first visit works and week 4 might confirm which areas you reach; for a clinic, week 3 should usually be an informational update instead of an offer. Our sector guides, such as pest control company marketing and gym and fitness studio marketing, show what proof and calls to action fit each field.
Anatomy of a post that gets a click
- Open with the one fact the reader cares about: the service, the date or the area, not the company slogan.
- Add detail in two or three short sentences: what is included, who it is for, what happens next.
- Use a real photo that shows the work, the place or the team, with permission.
- Pick one button that matches the goal: Call now for urgent services, Book or Learn more for planned ones.
- Keep the language consistent with your website, and check dates, prices and hours before you press Post.
Avoid stuffing keywords and city names; it reads badly and does nothing for the reader. Also avoid reposting your social media captions unchanged. People on a map are in a decision mood and want facts.
Measure it without guessing
Because Google's help does not describe post-level analytics, you build your own measure. First, tag every link in your posts with a campaign name so your analytics can tell post visits from other profile visits. Second, add a note to your lead sheet for source: 'Maps call', 'Maps website', 'WhatsApp from Maps'. Third, look at the Performance page of your profile, which shows interactions such as searches, views, calls, directions and website clicks, and requires a verified profile; searches update monthly and can lag by several days.
| Question | Where to look | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Did profile calls rise in posting months? | Business Profile performance, month on month | Keep or adjust the plan |
| Did post links bring visits and enquiries? | Analytics, filtered by your campaign tag | Reuse the themes that produced them |
| Which enquiries became jobs? | Your lead sheet with source and outcome | Prioritise sources with sales, not clicks |
| Did any post get rejected or stay pending? | Posts tab status | Fix and resubmit; log the reason |
Treat the comparison as directional, not proof: seasons, ads and reviews all affect calls. Our conversion tracking guide and monthly report template show how to keep this tidy, and the lead tracking spreadsheet is a simple start.
A hypothetical month
This is an invented example for illustration, not a client result. A home maintenance company posts four times in a month with a tagged button on each. In the month before, its profile showed 40 calls and 25 website clicks; in the posting month it shows 46 calls and 31 clicks. The honest conclusion is not that posts caused the rise. It is that there is no sign of harm, and that two of four tagged links produced enquiries in the lead sheet, both from the 'proof from a real job' theme. The next month the owner doubles that theme and drops the one that produced nothing.
How we work at ZED
We handle profile posting inside the same sequence we use for every service business: research, setup, call and WhatsApp tracking, then monthly reporting. In practice that means we agree the services and areas to highlight, prepare the monthly posts with photos you approve, tag the links, record the source of calls and WhatsApp messages with our conversion tracking, and report on enquiries each month. It sits alongside our SEO service and website service. See how we present work in the case studies and the AC services case study, plus the portfolio. We publish no price list; send your details and we reply with an initial plan.
Frequently asked questions
Do Google Business Profile posts improve my Maps ranking?
Google's help page describes posts as a way to share announcements, offers, updates and events with customers on Search and Maps. It does not say that posting changes ranking, so do not buy a posting plan on that promise. Treat posts as conversion content for people who have already found your profile.
How often should a service business post?
Google gives no required frequency. A realistic rhythm is one useful post a week, scheduled in a batch, because a profile showing recent activity looks cared for and your offers and hours stay current. If you cannot sustain weekly, post twice a month and keep it accurate rather than posting filler.
How long does a post stay visible?
According to Google's help, posts older than six months are archived unless you set a date range. Offer and event posts need dates and times, so they end on their own. Check older posts and delete anything that is no longer true.
Why is my post 'Pending' or 'Not approved'?
Google reviews posts against its content policy and shows them as Live, Pending or Not approved. Pending can also mean the profile itself is not verified. Common causes of rejection include phone numbers Google cannot verify as yours, content in regulated categories, and unprofessional or misleading text. Edit the post and resubmit, and use a Call now button instead of typing the number.
Can clinics and other regulated businesses use posts?
Yes, but with care. Health and medical advertising is governed by special rules from regulators and by platform policies, and Google's content policy asks you to follow applicable laws. Avoid claims about results, before-and-after content and promotions unless your regulator and the platform policies allow them, and keep posts factual: services, hours, doctors' names where permitted. See our medical advertising rules checklist.
How do I measure what posts bring in?
Google's performance reports cover interactions such as calls, directions and website clicks for the profile as a whole, and the help page does not mention post-level analytics. So tag every post link with a campaign name in your analytics, record the call and WhatsApp source in your lead sheet, and compare the weeks when you posted against the weeks when you did not.
Should I write posts in English, Arabic or both?
Write in the language your customers search and read in. In the UAE many businesses serve both, so alternate languages or post the same message in each, and keep the wording consistent with your website. Our bilingual SEO guide explains how to avoid mixed signals.
Can ZED manage my profile posts?
