AI Max for Search is a bundle of three options inside an existing Search campaign: search term matching, text customization and final URL expansion. For a service business it is worth testing, but not switching on blindly. Fix your conversion tracking first, make sure the campaign is not limited by budget, set brand and URL controls, and run it as an experiment against the same campaign with AI Max off. Judge it by booked jobs and cost per qualified enquiry, not by the extra queries it finds.
What Google says AI Max for Search does
Google's Help Center describes AI Max for Search campaigns as a set of targeting and creative enhancements that you can switch on within a Search campaign. It has three parts, and it helps to treat them as three separate decisions rather than one.
- Search term matching uses broad match, asset-based and landing-page-based technology, plus keywordless technology, to find relevant searches beyond your keyword list. Google says it can be turned off at the ad group level and is on by default when AI Max is on.
- Text customization, previously called automatically created assets, generates ad copy from your existing ad text, landing page copy and assets using generative AI. It is controlled at campaign level and can be turned off on its own.
- Final URL expansion sends traffic to other pages of your site when that is likely to perform better. Google says it only uses query-relevant URLs themed to the ad group, and that it requires text customization to be on.
Google also states that advertisers who activate AI Max in Search campaigns typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS. The Help page attributes this to Google's internal data from 2025 for non-Retail advertisers. Treat it as a vendor figure from a broad group of accounts, not as a forecast for a roofing firm in Sharjah or a clinic in Riyadh. Your own test is the only number that matters for your budget.
Why service businesses should be more careful than the average advertiser
A service company usually sells a handful of jobs in a limited geography with a small daily budget and a lead that is a phone call or a WhatsApp chat. That profile makes some of AI Max's features riskier than they look.
| Feature | What it can do for you | What can go wrong for a service firm | Starting stance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search term matching | Finds relevant searches your keywords did not cover | Pulls in vague or off-service queries; extra spend on low-intent searches | Test on, with negatives and weekly review |
| Text customization | Writes ad variants from your own pages and assets | Wording that overpromises, mentions services you do not offer or uses claims you cannot back | Review the assets report; switch off if copy drifts |
| Final URL expansion | Sends people to a more relevant page | Sends people to a page with no call button, the wrong language or a blog post; Google says pinning is not respected when it is on | Off at first, or on with URL exclusions |
| Brand controls | Lets you include or exclude brand searches | Mixing brand and non-brand results hides true acquisition cost | Set exclusions on the campaign |
One caution from Google's own documentation is worth underlining. The page says AI Max will not be effective if campaigns are limited by budget, and an alert appears when a campaign or portfolio is budget-limited. Many small service accounts are budget-limited by design. If yours is, widening the net of searches simply spreads a small budget across more queries.
Pre-flight checklist before you switch anything on
- Count the right conversions. Calls above a minimum duration, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions should be primary conversions; page views should not. Our tracking guide and the tracking and conversion service cover how.
- Know your baseline. Record four weeks of cost per qualified enquiry and booked jobs by campaign before the test.
- Check your budget status. If the campaign is limited by budget, fix that or reduce the number of locations first.
- Audit your landing pages. Every page the system might choose should have a clear call and WhatsApp button, correct language and a real service description. The landing page guide explains what to check.
- Look at tracking templates. Google warns that static tracking URLs or nonstandard use of the landing page parameter can cause 404 errors with dynamic landing pages, so verify landing pages before enabling AI Max.
- Clean the search terms history. Add negatives from the last two months using the search terms report guide, so the new matching does not start from a dirty base.
- Decide your brand rule. Do you want brand searches counted in this campaign? Use brand exclusions at campaign level if not.
Run it as an experiment, not a switch
Google provides an experiment type for this. From the Experiments page you choose campaign features and settings, then AI Max for Search campaigns, then the campaigns, the split, dates and whether to apply the result automatically if it is favourable. The control is a share of your existing Search campaign with AI Max off, and the trial is the remaining share with it on. Because traffic stays in one campaign, Google says results may arrive sooner and the learning period may be shorter.
The experiment cannot be created if the campaign has text customization enabled, targets the Display network, uses a portfolio bidding strategy or shared budgets, uses bidding exploration, or already has an active experiment. If a campaign cannot be selected, Google says to turn off "Optimize your campaign with AI". If your setup uses these features, do the preparatory clean-up first, or run a sequential test with clear dates and compare to the four-week baseline, accepting that seasonality can distort the comparison.
A hypothetical test plan with stop rules
The numbers below are illustrative only. They are not client data or a forecast. They show how to write the decision down before the test starts.
| Item | Example plan |
|---|---|
| Campaign | Core service campaign for one city, well tracked for at least a month |
| Split | Half the traffic with AI Max off, half with it on |
| Settings in the trial | Search term matching on, text customization on, final URL expansion off for the first test; brand exclusion set |
| Duration | Several weeks, long enough to see completed jobs, not only chats |
| Main metric | Cost per qualified enquiry, then cost per booked job |
| Guard metrics | Share of irrelevant search terms, enquiry quality notes from the front desk |
| Stop rule | If irrelevant terms exceed a share you set in advance, or ad copy makes a claim you cannot honour, switch off the offending feature |
| Go rule | Apply only if the trial beats control on booked jobs at similar or lower cost, without hurting quality |
Do not read a result as proof from a short window or a handful of jobs. Small accounts produce noisy results, and if both arms get only a few conversions the honest conclusion is "no clear difference", which is still useful because it saves you from changing a working account.
What to read after you switch it on
Google says AI Max adds reporting that did not exist before. The search terms report gets an AI Max match type and a source column, plus a combined view of search terms, headlines and URLs. The keywords report shows summary rows for AI Max contributions, the landing pages report adds a Selected by column, and the asset report shows how AI Max-optimised assets perform. Use them like this:
- Sort new search terms by cost and open the ones that spent without a conversion.
- Check whether any generated headline promises something you do not offer, such as a service, a discount or a response time you cannot keep.
- Look at the landing pages selected by the system and confirm each has the right language and a working contact button.
- Add negatives and URL exclusions weekly during the first month.
For people who work in both Arabic and English, include language in this review. If Arabic searches land on English pages, or the reverse, add URL exclusions or turn off final URL expansion. Our Arabic versus English ads article explains the split in more detail.
Which account should try it first?
| Your situation | Our suggestion |
|---|---|
| No reliable call or WhatsApp tracking | Fix tracking first; do not test |
| Budget-limited, one city, one main service | Keep exact and phrase keywords; fix budget before widening matching |
| Stable account, tracked calls, room in budget | Run the experiment with final URL expansion off |
| Many locations and services, strong landing pages | Test per campaign, starting with the one that has the most data |
| Account that already uses Performance Max | Treat them as separate tests and avoid changing both at once; see Performance Max for service businesses |
How we work at ZED
Our public Google Ads page already says that Performance Max is not recommended until tracking and conversion data are reliable, and the same principle applies here: automation is only as good as the signal you give it. We structure campaigns by buying intent, build a landing page for each ad group, add negative keywords from the start, review the search terms report weekly and track calls and WhatsApp clicks as conversions. When we take over an account we review tracking, structure and search terms before changing anything, and we do not delete history. Read about the Google Ads service, or see how bidding choices interact with this in the bidding strategies guide. We do not promise a timeline or guaranteed results, and we have no published case study that isolates AI Max, so we do not quote any.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI Max the same as Performance Max?
No. AI Max is a set of options inside a Search campaign, while Performance Max is a separate campaign type. Google's help pages describe AI Max as enhancements to Search campaigns.
Does AI Max replace my keywords?
Not necessarily. Google says search term matching uses broad match and other technologies to find additional queries. It also notes that broad keywords are no longer treated as exact match in prioritisation after upgrading, so add exact copies if you rely on that behaviour.
Can I turn off only final URL expansion?
Yes. Google describes it as a separate setting. It requires text customization to be on when final URL expansion is on, and pinned assets are not respected while it is active.
Will it work with a small budget?
Google says AI Max will not be effective if campaigns are limited by budget. Small accounts should check their budget status before testing.
How long should the experiment run?
Google does not give a fixed duration. Run it long enough to see completed jobs and enough conversions in both arms, and set the stop and go rules before you start.
Does AI Max help clinics or regulated services?
Health and other regulated advertisers must follow Google's policies and local rules. Automatically generated text needs careful review, so clinics should check every generated headline against policy and should not rely on automation to stay within them.
Can ZED set up the experiment for me?
Yes, as part of Google Ads management. We start with tracking and landing page checks, then agree the test plan with you.
