Keyword research for a service business is not a hunt for the biggest number. It is a way to learn the exact words your buyers use, group them by intent, and decide which page each group belongs on. Collect phrases from your own enquiries, Google Search Console, Google's autocomplete and People Also Ask boxes, Keyword Planner and the pages that already rank, then sort them into buy-now, compare, learn and local searches, and give each group one page. A realistic list of twenty to forty phrases mapped to real pages beats a spreadsheet of five thousand.
What is different when you sell a service in the UAE
Most keyword advice is written for blogs and online shops. A service business has other constraints. You serve limited areas, you cannot take every job, your buyers search in English and Arabic, and many of them end the search by sending a WhatsApp message rather than clicking a basket button. That is why a keyword with modest volume that matches your service and area can be worth more than a famous term that attracts the whole country.
It also means volume figures should be read as rough guides. Tools estimate averages and ranges, they often group close variants, and Arabic spelling variations can scatter demand across many forms. Use numbers to compare ideas with each other, not to forecast leads.
Step 1: begin with your own business, not a tool
Open the last fifty enquiries, WhatsApp chats and call notes. Underline the words people used in the first message. You will find three kinds of language:
- Service words such as "villa deep cleaning", "AC not cooling", "company formation".
- Place words such as an area, a community or "near me".
- Situation words such as "urgent", "moving next week", "for a landlord inspection".
These phrases are better than any tool suggestion because they come from people who actually paid or nearly paid. Add a column for how many enquiries became jobs. The lead log method in our lead tracking spreadsheet makes this easy.
Step 2: add what Google already shows
| Source | What it gives you | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Real queries that already show your site, with impressions and clicks | Only shows what you already appear for; see the Search Console guide |
| Google Ads search terms report | Queries that triggered paid ads and which led to enquiries | Reflects your keyword settings; read it with the search terms report guide |
| Autocomplete suggestions | Phrases people commonly type after your seed words | Varies by country and language setting; check from the right location |
| People Also Ask | Real questions around the topic | Questions change; save them as page sections |
| Google Keyword Planner | Idea lists and volume ranges | Broad ranges and grouped variants; a free account may show less detail |
| Competitor pages | Services and angles they cover | Copying titles leads to the same page; look for what they leave out |
For each seed term, search it yourself on a phone with your location set to the UAE city you serve. Note who ranks, whether the results are service pages, directories, map listings or articles, and whether an AI summary appears. That tells you what kind of page Google believes people want. The distinction matters, because a directory-dominated result is a different battle from one filled with local company pages.
Step 3: sort every phrase by intent
| Intent | Typical wording | Page that fits | Priority for a service business |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy now | pest control Sharjah, AC repair Marina, emergency plumber | Service page with a clear call, WhatsApp button, area and proof | Highest |
| Compare or evaluate | best moving company in Dubai, AMC contract vs one-off, company A vs B | Comparison or "how to choose" guide, plus reviews | High |
| Price research | villa deep cleaning cost, how much does it cost | Pricing explanation page with ranges you are willing to publish, or a calculator | High, if you can be honest about price |
| Learn | why is my AC leaking, how to prepare for a move | Helpful article linking to the service | Medium; builds trust, rarely converts directly |
| Local discovery | near me, in a named area | Google Business Profile and location pages | Highest for walk-in or on-site services |
| Job seekers, DIY, students | vacancy, salary, course, free | None | Exclude from ads, skip in content |
Step 4: map one main intent to one page
This step is where most plans fail. Two pages competing for the same phrase confuse both Google and the visitor. Create a simple sheet with four columns: the main phrase, the supporting phrases, the page that owns it, and the next action (create, improve, merge or leave). Then apply these rules:
- One service in one area gets one main page. Do not create near-identical pages for each neighbourhood unless each has real local content; the approach to branches and areas is discussed in our multi-location SEO guide.
- Supporting questions become sections on the page or short articles that link back.
- If you already have a page that nearly matches, improve it before creating a new one.
- Use the structure in the service page structure checklist when you write.
Step 5: handle English and Arabic properly
Do not translate keyword lists word for word. Arabic searchers use different phrases, and they spell dialect and formal forms differently. Research each language on its own, using local autocomplete and search results in that language, and build each page naturally in its language. The technical side, including language versions and hreflang, is in the bilingual website SEO guide. Where you advertise in both languages, the paid-search comparison in Arabic versus English Google Ads can help you decide what to test first.
A hypothetical worked example
Imagine a pest control company in Sharjah that also serves Ajman. All numbers are invented to show the process.
| Phrase | Intent | Existing page? | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| pest control Sharjah | Buy now, local | Home page mentions it briefly | Create a dedicated Sharjah service page |
| cockroach treatment apartment | Buy now | No | Create page, link from main service page |
| bed bugs how to get rid | Learn | No | Write one helpful article; include when to call a professional |
| pest control cost | Price research | No | Publish how pricing works and the factors, with a quote request button |
| pest control jobs | Job seeker | No | Ignore, add as ad negative |
The result is not a big list. It is five decisions, three pages to write and two things to leave alone, which is something a small business can finish.
Judging difficulty without paid tools
You do not need an expensive subscription to get a feel for difficulty. For each priority phrase, look at the first page and ask: are the results big directories, national brands or local companies like yours? How complete are the competing pages? Do they show proof, prices, photos, reviews and clear contact options? If you can produce a clearly better page for the specific service and area, the phrase is realistic. If page one is full of well-known marketplaces, the phrase is a long road, and a Google Business Profile, ads or a more specific phrase may serve you better. For the broader choice between channels, read Google Ads versus SEO.
Using keywords to also guide ads and content
A good keyword sheet serves more than SEO. Buy-now phrases become ad groups, learning questions become articles or FAQ sections, and excluded phrases become negative keywords. When a phrase is expensive in ads but ranks well organically, you may save budget; when organic is far away, ads fill the gap. This is also the language that AI answer tools tend to draw on, so clear service pages with real questions answered help there too; see the AI search optimisation guide.
A monthly routine that keeps the list alive
Keyword research is not a one-off project. Once a month, spend an hour on three tasks. First, open Search Console and look for queries where you appear but receive few clicks; these often need a better title or a clearer section on the page. Second, read the new enquiries and note any phrase that is missing from your sheet. Third, check whether any priority page has drifted away from its phrase, for example because someone added unrelated services to it. Small, regular corrections keep the sheet honest and show you which pages deserve more effort next.
Common keyword research mistakes
- Chasing high-volume terms that bring the wrong audience.
- Targeting a city you do not serve because the volume looks good.
- Building a page for every phrase variation.
- Ignoring the questions customers ask on WhatsApp.
- Translating English phrases into Arabic without checking real searches.
- Never revisiting the list; review it quarterly, using Search Console data.
