Quick answer

A customer testimonial video works when it is specific, honest and short: one real customer, one problem, what the work involved and what changed, filmed in the place where the work happened. Get written permission first, never script feelings the customer did not express, avoid anything that implies guaranteed results, and publish the video where the buyer decides, which means the service page, the Google Business Profile and WhatsApp replies, not only social media. For health services, check your authority's rules before using patient testimonials at all.

Why a testimonial video persuades differently from a written review

A written review proves that someone typed words. A video shows a real person, a recognisable place and a tone of voice, which are harder to fake and easier to believe. For a service company this matters because the buyer cannot inspect the work in advance. A short clip of a customer standing in a renovated kitchen or a repainted villa answers the unspoken question: will these people do what they say?

Video does not replace written reviews. It complements them. Written reviews on Google are what people see in search results and on maps, so keep building them with the routine in our Google reviews strategy. Use video as the second layer for visitors who are already comparing you with two other companies.

Who to ask, and when

Ask customers who have just seen the finished result and were pleased with it, ideally while the work is fresh. Good candidates are those who left a detailed review, thanked your team unprompted or called back for a second job. Do not ask a customer who had a difficult project that was resolved late; their feedback may be fair, but a video is not the place to rehearse a recovery story.

Timing is simple: ask at handover, when you are already on site and the customer is looking at the result. A short message the same evening is the second best option. Offer an easy choice: a 30-second video, a voice note, or a written quote with a photo. Nobody should feel obliged, and you should not give discounts in exchange for positive content because that undermines credibility and may break platform and consumer rules.

Permission and privacy checklist

  • Written permission from the person speaking, stating where the video may be used and for how long.
  • Permission from anyone else visible, including family members and staff of the customer.
  • Nothing identifying beyond what the customer agrees to: house numbers, car plates, documents, screens.
  • A way to withdraw: tell them whom to message if they want the video removed, and honour it.
  • For clinics and other regulated services: confirm with your licensing authority what is allowed. Many health rules limit or forbid patient testimonials and outcome claims, and platforms add their own restrictions.
  • No payment or hidden reward that changes the meaning of the testimonial, unless disclosure rules are followed.

This is orientation, not legal advice. If in doubt, ask a qualified adviser before publishing.

Four questions that produce usable answers

People freeze when told to "say something nice". Give them questions and let them answer in their own words. Four are enough.

  1. What was the situation before you called us?
  2. Why did you choose us over other options?
  3. What was it like to work with the team, and was anything different from what you expected?
  4. What would you tell a friend who is thinking about hiring a company like ours?

Question two is the most useful for marketing because it names the real buying reasons, such as clear quotation, punctuality or tidy work. Do not put words in the customer's mouth. If an answer is vague, ask a follow-up such as "what exactly was tidy?" rather than supplying the adjective.

Production on a small budget

ChoiceSimple optionWhen to upgrade
CameraRecent phone, horizontal for the website and vertical for social platforms; record twice if you need bothWhen you need consistent brand quality across many videos
AudioQuiet room, phone close to the speaker, or a small clip-on microphoneAlways worth a basic microphone; bad audio ruins good footage
LocationThe finished job, with daylightComplex jobs where the site is not ready for filming
Length30-60 seconds, with a longer cut only if the story is strongCase-study pages that describe a larger project
CaptionsBurned-in subtitles in the language spoken; a translated version if neededWhen you publish for both Arabic and English audiences

If you want a professional team, brief them carefully; the guide on how to brief a video content agency lists what to prepare. Our content video service covers production for service businesses.

Editing: a simple structure

  1. Title card (2 seconds): customer first name or initial if they agree, service and area. Example: Villa repaint, Al Barsha.
  2. The customer speaking (20-40 seconds): cut to the best answers to questions one to three.
  3. Cutaway shots (5-10 seconds): the finished work, tools, the team at work, laid over the voice.
  4. End card (3 seconds): your name and how to book, such as message us on WhatsApp.

Remove filler gently but keep the person's rhythm. A natural pause is more convincing than a polished sentence. Do not add music that competes with the voice, and do not use generated voices or actors; a staged testimonial presented as real is deceptive.

What makes a testimonial look fake

  • Perfect, generic praise. "Amazing company, highly recommended" says nothing. Viewers trust detail: the date, the problem, the surprise.
  • Only five-star energy. A customer who mentions that the start was delayed but the team fixed it can be more believable than one who praises everything.
  • Staff in the frame. If an employee stands next to the customer holding the phone, the answers sound rehearsed.
  • Stock footage over the voice. Use your own site photographs, even if they are less polished.
  • Claims the customer cannot know. A homeowner can say the job was tidy; they cannot say your company is the best in the country.

A short release wording you can adapt

Have your adviser check the final text for your business. The idea is plain language that covers the essentials: the customer agrees that the video and their name or first name may be used on your website, Business Profile and social channels; they understand how long it will be used; they can ask for removal by messaging a stated channel; and they have not been paid for what they said. Keep signed copies together with the file, a date and the job reference, so you can find them if someone asks for removal.

Measuring whether it helps

Testimonial videos rarely produce a visible spike. Their effect is on conversion: the share of visitors who ask for a quotation or message you. Compare the conversion rate of a service page before and after adding a video, over a period long enough to include similar traffic, and keep notes about other changes made at the same time. Also ask new customers in your first conversation whether they watched anything before contacting you. Your lead sheet should record the answer. The tracking basics are in tracking calls and WhatsApp, and the numbers to review each month are listed in marketing KPIs for service businesses.

A hypothetical example

Imagine a small landscaping firm with a service page that gets 400 visits in a month and 12 enquiries, a 3 percent rate. It adds two customer videos to the page and keeps everything else unchanged. In the next month, with similar traffic, the page produces 16 enquiries, 4 percent. The numbers are invented; the point is the method. A change of this size could be luck, so keep the videos for a few months and look at the trend rather than a single month.

How we work at ZED

We handle the planning and production side through our content videos and social media services, and the creative video ads portfolio shows the style of video work we publish. Our case studies cover AC services, cleaning, moving, furniture showrooms, medical marketing and real estate. We do not invent testimonials, and we do not promise that a video will increase sales by a specific amount. We would start by looking at the pages where your buyers decide and recommend where a customer voice is most useful.

Plan your first customer videos

Send your services and the kind of customers you would like to feature. We reply with a preliminary plan and a question list to use on site.
