Quick answer

Core Web Vitals are three real-user measures: LCP (loading, good at 2.5 seconds or less), INP (responsiveness, 200 ms or less) and CLS (layout stability, 0.1 or less), judged at the 75th percentile on mobile and desktop. For a service business, fix the pages that bring enquiries first: server response, hero image, heavy scripts and chat widgets, layout jumps, then confirm WhatsApp and call tracking still works.

Why a service business should care about speed at all

For a plumber, a law firm or a clinic-adjacent service company, the website has one job: get a visitor to call, send a WhatsApp message or request a quote. If the page appears slowly on a mobile connection, jumps while the visitor tries to tap a button, or ignores the first touch, you lose enquiries you paid for. This is a business problem before it is a technical one.

Google gives site owners three measures called Core Web Vitals. On its Search documentation, Google says they measure real-world user experience for loading, interactivity and visual stability, that it highly recommends achieving good scores for success in Search, and that this aligns with what its core ranking systems seek to reward. Google does not say how much weight they carry, so treat speed as one part of a good site, not as a magic ranking switch. Most of the benefit comes from fewer visitors leaving before they contact you.

The three metrics, in plain words

MetricPlain meaningGood threshold (web.dev)Typical service-site cause
LCP, Largest Contentful PaintHow long until the main thing on screen (often the hero image or headline) appears2.5 seconds or lessHeavy hero image, slow hosting, render-blocking scripts or fonts
INP, Interaction to Next PaintHow quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks200 milliseconds or lessToo many scripts, chat widgets, tag managers, sliders
CLS, Cumulative Layout ShiftHow much the page jumps around while loading0.1 or lessImages without dimensions, banners or cookie notices that push content, late-loading fonts

Web.dev explains that a page is assessed at the 75th percentile of page loads, separately for mobile and desktop, and passes only if it meets all three targets. In plain terms, three out of four real visits should have a good experience, and a test on your fast office laptop and Wi-Fi does not represent that.

Field data versus lab data

Field data comes from real visitors, through sources such as the Chrome User Experience Report, PageSpeed Insights and the Search Console Core Web Vitals report. Lab data comes from a controlled test in Lighthouse or Chrome DevTools. Web.dev notes that lab tools complement field data but do not replace it, and that Lighthouse cannot measure INP because there is no real user input, so Total Blocking Time is used as a lab proxy. The practical rule: use lab scores to find causes, and field data to judge whether the problem is real.

A small service site may have too little traffic for some pages to appear in field data at all. In that case, test the important pages on a mid-range phone using a normal mobile connection, repeat the test at different times, and treat the results as a guide. Our website service includes checking these pages.

Fix in this order for a lead-generation website

  1. Choose the pages that matter. The home page, your top three service pages, the contact page, and any landing page used for Google Ads. Test those, not every URL.
  2. Check the server response. If the first byte is slow, no front-end fix will fully help. Ask your host about caching, PHP version, and server location relative to your visitors.
  3. Fix the hero image. Use a correctly sized modern format image, do not lazy-load the first large image, and make sure the browser discovers it early.
  4. Remove or delay scripts. Audit your tag manager, chat widgets, social feeds and sliders. Load what is not needed for the first tap after the page appears.
  5. Stop the jumping. Give images and embeds width and height, reserve space for banners, and avoid inserting content above what the visitor is reading.
  6. Handle fonts. Use fewer font files, and check Arabic fonts specifically, which can be larger than Latin fonts.
  7. Retest and log. Compare before and after for the same pages, and record the date.

The WhatsApp button is a script too

Many UAE service sites carry a floating WhatsApp button, a chat widget, a call button, and sometimes a live-visitor popup. Each is useful for leads, and each adds code. Test the effect honestly: does the page respond promptly after you tap the button? Does the widget appear late and push content? A simple click-to-chat link, such as a plain WhatsApp URL in a button, is much lighter than a heavy third-party widget. If the heavy widget is essential to your sales process, load it after the first interaction or after the main content, and measure whether leads drop. Read our article on website forms versus WhatsApp lead capture to decide which entry points you need.

Whatever you change, keep conversion tracking working. After an optimisation, tag managers sometimes lose events. Test a WhatsApp click and a phone tap on a real phone, and check that they are recorded. Our guide to tracking calls and WhatsApp shows what to verify.

Arabic and bilingual sites: extra checks

  • Arabic and English pages should have the same image and script discipline; do not let the Arabic version load extra plugins.
  • Check the right-to-left layout on mobile for overlap or shifting menus.
  • Compare font loading across languages; heavy font files delay text.
  • Test both language versions of the key pages separately.
  • Keep language switchers light; avoid loading large scripts only to translate labels.

How we work at ZED

ZED Marketing builds and improves websites for service businesses. We follow four steps: audit your key pages and tracking, plan the order of fixes by their effect on enquiries, execute the changes, and measure leads afterwards. We are not claiming a particular score before looking at your site, because speed depends on your hosting, theme, plugins and images. Enquiries start on WhatsApp: send your website address and we will reply with a first outline. For ongoing care, see website maintenance cost; for a larger rebuild, the redesign checklist and web design in Dubai page describe the options. You can also reach us through the contact page.

A hypothetical before and after

The numbers are invented to show how to compare results. Imagine a service site that gets 1,000 mobile visits a month to its three key pages and 30 WhatsApp clicks, so 3 percent. The owner finds a 2 MB hero image and a heavy chat widget. After resizing the image, removing the widget and testing on mobile, the next month brings 1,000 visits and 38 clicks, so 3.8 percent. That might be improvement, or it might be seasonality or ad changes, so the owner checks the same pages in the same period and does not claim speed as the only reason. Always change one thing at a time when you can, and note the date.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Chasing a perfect lab score on pages that bring no leads.
  • Testing only on a desktop and fast Wi-Fi.
  • Installing several optimisation plugins that conflict.
  • Lazy-loading the main hero image.
  • Removing tracking scripts and breaking conversion tracking.
  • Ignoring cookie banners and popups that cause layout shift.
  • Never retesting after adding a new plugin or tag.

Quick checklist

  • Pages chosen: home, top services, contact, landing pages.
  • Server response checked with the host.
  • Hero image resized and not lazy-loaded.
  • Third-party scripts audited.
  • Dimensions set for images and embeds.
  • Mobile test done on a real phone.
  • WhatsApp and call tracking verified after changes.
  • Date and results logged.

If your site is old, heavy or built on a template that cannot be fixed, compare the cost of repair with a rebuild. Our maintenance article and the redesign checklist help you decide.

Questions to put to your web developer or host

  • Which of our pages are measured in field data, and what are their LCP, INP and CLS values on mobile?
  • What is the largest element on the home page and each service page, and how big is that file?
  • Which third-party scripts load on every page, and what does each one do for the business?
  • Is caching enabled, and where is the server located relative to our UAE and Saudi visitors?
  • Can the WhatsApp and call buttons be plain links that need no extra script?
  • What will you retest after the changes, and how will you show us the before and after?

A developer who can answer these in plain language is usually easier to work with than one who only quotes a score. Ask for the answers in writing, keep them with your lead log, and revisit them whenever you add a plugin, a new tag or a redesigned section. Speed is not a one-time project; it drifts as pages gain extra images, scripts and widgets.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Core Web Vitals thresholds?

Web.dev lists good values as LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, INP of 200 milliseconds or less and CLS of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of page loads, separately for mobile and desktop.

Do Core Web Vitals affect Google rankings?

Google says it highly recommends good scores for success in Search and that they align with what its core ranking systems seek to reward, but it does not state how much weight they carry. Treat them as part of overall page experience and conversion quality.

What tools can I use to check my website speed?

The Search Console Core Web Vitals report, PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse and Chrome DevTools. Use field data to judge real experience and lab data to find causes.

Why can Lighthouse not measure INP?

Web.dev explains that Lighthouse has no real user input during a lab test, so it uses Total Blocking Time as a proxy. INP needs real interactions, which is why field data matters.

Which pages should I fix first?

Pages that bring or convert enquiries: the home page, main service pages, contact page and any landing page used for ads. Do not spend your time on pages with no role in lead generation.

Can a WhatsApp chat widget slow my website?

Yes, any third-party script can. A plain click-to-chat link is lighter than a heavy widget. If you need the widget, test the effect and consider loading it later in the page lifecycle.

My site has little traffic and no field data. What should I do?

Test the key pages on a real phone over a normal mobile connection at different times, fix the biggest images and scripts, and log the results. The Search Console report may not show pages with too little data.
